Debunking the hairstyle myths around what we should and shouldn’t do.

On a daily basis we are bombarded with messages of should and should not’s:

  • ‘what clothes you shouldn’t wear’
  • ‘what style is appropriate for your age and body shape’ AND
  • ‘your face shape doesn’t really suit that hairstyle’.

We’re going to debunk those blogs and articles about who suits what, and show you what you really need is a great hairdresser who can translate hairstyles and hair cuts into shapes that suit you.

Face Shapes

The face shapes that most commonly referred to are:

  1. Oval
  2. Round
  3. Square
  4. Heart
  5. Long

But not everyone fits neatly into one category and often a face can be a combination of two shapes! The goal of any great hairdresser is always to accentuate features that flattering.

Hairstyles for Oval Face Shapes

Oval face shapes tend to suit many hairstyles.   Lily Jackson Hair & Makeup stylists have been trained to find your best feature and emphasise it.

Take Jennifer Aniston for example, she has an ‘oval face shape’ and yet her many hair styles over the years are a testament to the fact that we do not have to limit ourselves by thinking we can only have this hairstyle and not that one.

A classic oval face shape no-no is to avoid having long hair with long layers as it will elongate the length of the face and draw attention to the chin. But many of Jennifer Aniston’s styles are exactly that – long hair with long layers !

Hairstyles for Square Face Shapes

A square face shape is characterized by a strong jawline and the cheeks or side of the face is relatively straight down. Emphasising a strong facial structure like a strong jawline is not a bad thing and a straight one length haircut will do this. Layering and texturing the hair will soften the face and de-emphasise this feature.

Angelina Jolie is another great example of having strong facial features and yet able to wear many different styles. I think we can all agree that even though she is has a square face shape she can pull off many looks.

According to the do’s and DONT’S myths of hairdressing, a square face shape should have soft layering and texture and no strong or harsh lines. As you can see in the images below, breaking the ‘rules’ still works for Angelina because these hairstyles are all about emphasising her best features.

Hairstyles for Round Face Shapes

A round face has no prominent features like high cheekbones or a pointy chin and will suit hairstyles at any length.  A hair cut (if executed correctly) a few inches below the jawline will lengthen the face and adding structured layering around the face will compliment by giving shape.

Cameron Diaz has had so many different hairstyles over the years its hard to choose just three images to show that. Even though she has a round face shape, she can rock any style she wants and has many examples of the best hairstyles for round faces.  Irrespective of these women’s celebrity status, you need to remember that they just people with the same hair dilemmas that we all have.  You just need to find a great hairdresser who likes to take clients on hair journey’s.

Hairstyles for Heart Face Shapes

A heart shape face means the face usually narrows at the jaw. A fringe, be it side or full, will draw attention down the face towards the eyes. The rest of the style can be free but long layers will give the illusion of a fuller jaw.

Long, short, layered, not layered, fringe or no fringe, Reese Witherspoon proves that heart shape faces do not have to have a fringe or layers to emphasise certain features.

People can rock any look with the correct hair management and styling.  It’s about promoting and complimenting the features you like most about yourself, or that you often get compliments on.

But not everyone likes fringes, layers or short hair…

So in choosing a new hairstyle all aspects about YOU should be taken in to consideration. This includes your likes and dislikes, your fashion sense, your family, your job, your hobbies, you favourite pass times and even your home maintenance and whether you even like going to the hairdresser!
