A: YES!

What to avoid after a permanent hair straightening

It’s vital that you treat your hair in the following manner in the first 48 hours of receiving a Keune Hair Straightening.

  1. Do not shampoo your hair
  2. Avoid any form of moisture like excessive perspiration (think sauna’s)
  3. You should try to keep your hair as straight as possible for 1 week: avoid using clips, putting hair behind ears or propping hair up with sunglasses.
  4. Sleep on your hair rather than lifting it off your neck onto the pillow.
  5. Do not colour your hair for at least 2 weeks after your straightening service.

Hair colouring

It’s best to colour the hair two weeks after a permanent straightening. This should be performed in-salon by a professional stylist who is familiar with permanent hair straightening. Bleached hair requires greater precautions since the solutions can react differently depending on the different peroxides on the hair, causing uneven results. Always consult with a professional hair stylist for best results.

Ongoing care and styling

  • Use the recommended shampoo, conditioner and treatments to maintain the condition of your hair.
  • When blow drying your hair, always blow dry with the nozzle pointing downwards to smooth the cuticle of the hair.

Use the recommended shampoos and treatments

As chemical treatments and and colours may weaken hair and make it more fragile and vulnerable to damage the professional home hair care range designed to be used with the permanent hair straightening is included in the price of your service. Our stylists will include the shampoo and conditioner best suited to your hair needs.

A: Hair that is treated with the Keune hair straightening and Rebonding system that we use will remain straight almost permanently. However, new hair will grow according to its natural texture. We recommend that you get permanent straightening touch-ups every 4 to 6 months, but the time frame will vary depending on your natural hair texture and how quickly your hair grows.

A: The solutions used for Hair Straightening permanently straightens the hair. The solutions penetrate the hair cuticle and physically change the internal structure of the hair that cause frizziness or curl. By applying heat with a flat iron, it creates a permanent straight shape. This page goes into the process in a little more detail.

A: Yes. The solutions do not contain any chemicals that produce formaldehyde. Nor do any of the solutions come into contact with your skin.

For best results, permanent hair straightening must be performed by experienced stylists.  At Lily Jackson Hair & Makeup you will receive a detailed consultation.  Should your hair be considered suitable for permanent hair straightening, we will also take a hair sample to test the solutions on your hair to confirm suitability and processing times.

A: While the manufacturer says “Yes”, our experience is that hair that has been damaged through repeated highlights or bleaching may not withstand the hair straightening process.  The hair sample test conducted as part of the consultation will be the ultimate determinant of your hair’s suitability.  Hair that has been bleached (including highlights) may alternatively benefit from a Keratin Smoothing Treatment also offered by Lily Jackson Hair & Makeup.

The best candidate for Permanent Hair Straightening is healthy virgin hair or hair that has been coloured by a stylist with single process colour (not home colour).

A: No.

If you colour your hair at the salon, it should be done at least 2 weeks before or 2 weeks after the straightening procedure. Applying both chemical treatments simultaneously will result in hair damage, so do them separately to avoid undesirable results.

A: No.

We do not recommend getting permanent hair straightening after a keratin smoothing treatment. Our recommendation is to wait a minimum of 6 months until the relaxer/Brazilian/Keratin Treatment coating worn off your hair before getting Permanent hair straightening.  Applying the permanent straightening solutions over hair that has had a Keratin Treatment will potentially damage and weaken the hair.

A: Permanent hair straightening permanently straightens hair by penetrating the hair shaft and physically changing the internal structure of hair.

Brazilian/Keratin treatments temporarily coats the hair with keratin to smooth the hair strand. Brazilian/Keratin treatments will wash out on average between 3-5 months, so you must visit a salon often to re-coat the hair with this method. There have been a number of Brazilian/Keratin treatments that have come to the attention of government health authorities as containing hazardous chemicals which release highly carcinogenic gas.

We are pleased to say that the system of Keratin Smoothing Treatment that Lily Jackson Hair & Makeup use, has been tested to the strictest standards and does not contain any ingredient which releases carcinogenic gases.

A: No. Hair that has been lightened in anyway is not suitable for the type of permanent straightening we use.Lightened hair is generally not strong enough to withstand an additional chemical process and we highly recommend you consider a keratin smoothing treatment.
