5 Low Maintenance Haircuts for Women Over 50 in Sydney
Stylish and Easy to Manage Haircuts for Women Over 50
As women age, finding a low-maintenance haircut that still looks stylish and suits their lifestyle becomes a priority. For women over 50 living in Sydney, there are several haircuts that offer ease of maintenance without compromising on style.
A great haircut created by an experienced stylist can often be wash and wear. However, most haircuts always look better blow dried and styled – even short hair. But if that’s absolutely not your thing, then make sure you talk to your stylist about your needs in that regard. You might be surprised to find out that the hairstyle you’re trying to achieve could be blast blow dried with the right styling product to give instant volume, or made easier to style by having a keratin treatment.
We will walk you through 5 perfect options, helping you choose the best look that fits your needs.
1. Pixie Cut
The pixie cut is a short, layered haircut that is incredibly easy to style and maintain. It’s a versatile style that can be tailored to flatter different face shapes, making it a popular choice for women over 50.
The great thing about our stylists at Lily Jackson Hairdressing is that we can tailor a look to suit your desired preference on style, hair type and lifestyle. A pixie cut for women over 50 can be a lot of different things as you can see from these client images below.
Why It’s Great
This haircut requires minimal effort to look polished. The short layers add volume and texture, ensuring your hair looks stylish with very little upkeep. See OUR 6 FAVOURITE CELEBRITY PIXIE HAIRCUTS OF 2019
Pixie Cut Maintenance Tips
- This style does require regular haircuts every 3-5 weeks (depending on how much hair you have and how quickly it grows) to maintain an effortless shape and ease of styling. So keep in mind that what you save in terms of styling time you will spend in the salon getting regular haircuts.
- Use the professional styling products recommended to you. A lightweight styling cream or mousse to add texture will elevate your look every time.
- Don’t give up on blow-drys! A quick blow-dry will enable you to change the style even further. Just because you have short hair doesn’t mean you will be limited to wearing it only in one style.
2. Short sides long top Hair
How else can we describe this?
It’s where you have short-ish sides and back (and this can be a fade to a few inches) and a longer top section that is textured and cut for movement, volume and versatility in styling.
Take a look at the diversity of the images below.
Lyn has a graduated line cut into the rear of the head to create volume shape and interest.
Then at the top and front beautiful sections have been cut in to create movement and a versatility of styling options. You wouldn’t think she battled with grey almost white hair that was very fine and difficult to style.
Sharp blunt angles cut into graduated layers is the key! Plus a fabulous cool blonde toner to make her platinum hair sing! This is definitely a style that requires blow drying to look this fabulous but it might only take 7 minutes to achieve using a nozzle, brush and styling product.
Jasmine’s hair below has a slightly different treatment, but still short at the sides and longer on the top. The hair can be styled in lots of different ways with a long universal top.
Susan’s hair below is a big softer and longer at the sides and back to give a fuller appearance. Note the beautiful textures and freshly toned grey hair. Her fringe is also textured and longer than a pixie cut, but it’s still a short haircut. Note Susan has fine hair and our recommendation to her was to use volume building shampoo, conditioner and styling product. She won’t be able to achieve this kind of look wash and wear, but a short 5 minute blowdry is worth the effort!
And what about Kylie’s unicorn pink statement colour with a fabulous short haircut? Just because you’re over 50 doesn’t mean you can’t rock creative highlight colours and a great short haircut! And just to be clear, this is a high maintenance look.
Colour and haircut every 4 weeks to keep it looking fabulous. Regular blowdries to achieve the smoothness and volume. Kylie thinks it is worth it and so do we!
3. Classic Bob
The classic bob is a timeless haircut that falls at the chin or just above the shoulders. It’s a versatile cut that can be styled straight or with soft waves, using styling tools like a curling wand or narrow irons.
Why It’s Great
The bob is a great choice for women over 50 because it offers a chic and sophisticated look with minimal maintenance. It’s perfect for those who want a neat and tidy appearance without spending too much time on their hair.
There are lots of variations to the bob that you should consider. Take a look at some of the bob hairstyles created by Lily Jackson Hairdressing stylists for our clients:
- Wavy bob with highlights
- Blunt cut bob for fine hair with Balayage highlights
- Asymmetrical bob with highlights – slightly longer on one side (but not too much) this style can be blowdried in any number of ways to achieve different looks. Note how the dimensional highlights provide interest, variation, depth and movement all at once to support the cool hairstyle.
- Graduated bob with face framing textures and highlights – notice the shorter length at the back which will create a lovely volumised profile. Our client had naturally straight hair so this style will be a breeze for her to maintain at home. She also had highlights and a toner to add dimension to her dark grey hair.
Classic Bob Styling Options
- Straight: Use a flat iron for a sleek look.
- Wavy: If you have some natural waves, you can amplify their look by using a curl styling cream for normal textured hair or if you have fine hair, you could use a sea salt spray and scrunch your hair for natural waves.
- Accessories: Add a headband or clips for a quick style change.
Amp it up!
- If your hair is grey and you are colouring it, and you wanted to know how we would approach a grey hair transition, book a “grey hair consultation and haircut” with one of our stylists.
3. Shoulder-Length Lob (Long Bob)
The lob, or long bob, is a longer version of the classic bob that grazes the shoulders. It offers more styling options while remaining low-maintenance.
Why It’s Great
This style provides the length needed for various hairstyles while still being easy to manage. You can wear it straight, wavy, or even pull it back into a ponytail, giving you plenty of flexibility.
Styling Flexibility
- Straight: Blow-dry with a round brush for volume and sleekness.
- Wavy: Use a curling wand for loose waves.
- Updo: Pull it back into a low ponytail or bun for an elegant look.
Amp it up!
- If you have the type of hair that needs a blowdry or flat irons to achieve the sleek look you love, then consider getting a keratin smoothing treatment. It will reduce the time and effort needed to blowdry and/or iron your hair.
4. Layered Cut
Being over 50 doesn’t rule out long hair!
Performed correctly by expert stylists, a layered cut adds shape and movement to your hair. Layers can reduce the heaviness of thick hair and enhance the natural texture, making it easier to style. Why It’s Great
Why It’s Great
This haircut is ideal for all hair types except for women with fine hair. It allows for a stylish look with minimal effort, as the layers create natural volume and reduce the need for extensive styling.
How to care for a Layered Cut
- Use professional shampoo and conditioner that is suited to your hair type ie hydrating if you tend towards dryness, colour saving if you have colour and so on
- Blast blowdrying using a styling aid with your head upside down can quickly create volume although watch out for frizz and fly aways!
- Consider getting a keratin smoothing treatment to reduce styling times and increasing smoothness. These treatments can be formulated and applied in a way to provide body and movement, rather than just straight hair.
5. Shag Cut
The shag cut is a layered, textured cut that gives a casual, tousled look. It’s perfect for those who prefer a trendy, low-effort style and looks great on straight or wavy hair.
Why It’s Great
The shag cut creates natural movement and body, making it a great option for women who want a stylish look with minimal styling.
Trendy Styles for Shag Cut
- Blast Blow dried Tousled Look: Use a texturizing spray to enhance layers.
- Soft Waves: Curl random sections with a curling iron.
- Air-Dry: Let your hair air-dry for a natural, effortless look.
Amp it up!
- If you have curly or wavy hair, ask your stylist about dry cutting – ie cutting the hair when it is dry and in its natural state.
Curly hair dry cut for women over 50
One of the easiest haircuts to maintain for women over 50 is curly hair in any style.
Why It’s Great
Almost every style of curly hair can be wash and wear, air dried and look fabulous with the help of professional styling products to reduce frizz and maintain the curl.
Take a look at our before and after images below. Our client was in need of a blunt cut with a lot of shape.
Our stylist cut away the straggly ends without sacrificing length, but then natural curl took over and bounced up. We also created channels in the haircut profile to create lift and shape supported by our favourite styling products for curly hair.
We then added a toner to neutralise the unwanted yellow tones to give a clean and fresh grey look. This is a wash and wear style, haircuts probably best every 8-10 weeks and a toner every 6 weeks.
