Q: How long does a Japanese hair straightening process take?
A: 3-4 hours, depending on the hair type, length of hair, amount of hair and overall health of the hair.
The general process of Japanese Permanent Hair Straightening is outlined on this page.
Q: Is there anything special I need to do after receiving a permanent hair straightening?
What to avoid after a permanent hair straightening
It’s vital that you treat your hair in the following manner in the first 48 hours of receiving a Japanese Hair Straightening.
- You must not wet, wash or style your hair in any way. This allows the neutraliser to settle in properly.
- Avoid creating any creases or dents on the hair like tying your hair up with an elastic or ribbon, or pushing hair off the face with sunglasses.
- Avoid tucking your hair in back of your ear and do not wear hats.
- It is recommended to avoid going to the gym as this can affect your hair.
It’s best to colour the hair two weeks after a permanent straightening. This should be performed in-salon by a professional stylist who is familiar with permanent hair straightening. Bleached hair requires greater precautions since the solutions can react differently depending on the different peroxides on the hair, causing uneven results. Always consult with a professional hair stylist for best results.
Ongoing care and styling
Always dry your hair to 100% using our professional at home hair care products to maintain hair health and shine.
Use the recommended shampoos and treatments
As chemical treatments and and colours may weaken hair and make it more fragile and vulnerable to damage the professional home hair care range designed to be used with the Japanese permanent hair straightening is included in the price of your service. Our stylists will include the shampoo and conditioner best suited to your hair needs. These products contain the unique ingredient “Aqua Gold” which promotes ongoing healthy hair.
Q: How long does Japanese hair straightening last?
A: Hair that is treated with the patented hair straightening system that we use will remain straight almost permanently. However, new hair will grow according to its natural texture. We recommend that you get permanent straightening touch-ups every 4 to 6 months, but the time frame will vary depending on your natural hair texture and how quickly your hair grows.
Q: How does Japanese Hair Straightening work?
A: The solutions used for Japanese Hair Straightening permanently straightens the hair. The solutions penetrate the hair cuticle and physically change the internal structure of the hair that cause frizziness or curl. By applying heat with a flat iron, it creates a permanent straight shape. This page goes into the process in a little more detail.
Q: Is Japanese Hair Straightening safe?
A: Yes. The solutions do not contain any chemicals that produce formaldehyde or any other cancer-causing substances. Nor do any of the solutions come into contact with your skin.
For best results, permanent hair straightening must be performed by experienced stylists. At Lily Jackson Hair & Makeup you will receive a detailed consultation. Should your hair be considered suitable for permanent hair straightening, we will also take a hair sample to test the solutions on your hair to confirm suitability and processing times.
Q: Does this system of hair straightening work on any type of hair?
A: While the manufacturer says “Yes”, our experience is that hair that has been damaged through repeated highlights or bleaching may not withstand the hair straightening process. The hair sample test conducted as part of the consultation will be the ultimate determinant of your hair’s suitability. Hair that has been bleached (including highlights) may alternatively benefit from a Keratin Smoothing Treatment also offered by Lily Jackson Hair & Makeup.
The best candidate for Japanese Hair Straightening is healthy virgin hair or hair that has been coloured by a stylist with single process colour (not home colour).
Q: Can I have permanent hair straightening and colour at the same time?
If you colour your hair at the salon, it should be done at least 2 weeks before or 2 weeks after the straightening procedure. Applying both chemical treatments simultaneously will result in hair damage, so do them separately to avoid undesirable results.
Q: I have done a different brand of Japanese hair straightening before. Can I still have your system of hair straightening done?
A: If the previous hair straightening procedure uses the same chemical (Ammonium Thioglycolate) as our straightening solutions, applying our permanent straightening system will not be a problem. Please contact the manufacturer of the previous brand to make sure chemicals are the same. Even if both use the same chemicals, it is possible the hair straightening process may not fully work if the hair is badly damaged already.
Q: I have done a relaxer/Brazilian/Keratin treatment before. Can I still have Japanese Hair Straightening done?
We do not recommend getting permanent hair straightening after a keratin smoothing treatment. Our recommendation is to wait a minimum of 6 months until the relaxer/Brazilian/Keratin Treatment coating worn off your hair before getting Japanese hair straightening. Applying the permanent straightening solutions over hair that has had a Keratin Treatment will potentially damage and weaken the hair.
Q: How is your Japanese hair straightening different from other Japanese hair straightening methods?
A: The brand of Japanese hair straightening we use is Yuko Hair Straightening.
In addition to being a state-of-the-art hair straightening system, the patented Yuko Hair Straightening system is also a recognised technique of restoring health to the hair.
The proprietary ingredient that makes YUKO Hair Straightening more special than any other system is “Aqua Gold”.
Most Yuko products contain Aqua Gold. Adding “Aqua Gold” into the solution makes any water 100% active. Aqua Gold becomes Colloidal gold when mixed with water. This type of gold is much more effective at delivering the ingredients used in permanent hair straightening into the hair strand. That includes moisture and ingredients that nourish the hair strands.
It is estimated that this ingredient alone provides a 70%-80% greater advantage over other hair products that only use plain water. Acqua Gold ensures that the solution and treatment products used during a service penetrates every strand by supporting an ionic charge of each active ingredient enabling it to perform at its best.
Acqua Gold attracts, retains and balances moisture content of the hair which is essential for a glossy and moisturised finish.
Yuko Hair Straightening holds a patent in the US, as well as in Japan, New Zealand, Turkey and other countries.
Q: How is Japanese hair straightening different from Brazilian/Keratin treatment methods?
A: Japanese hair straightening permanently straightens hair by penetrating the hair shaft and physically changing the internal structure of hair.
Brazilian/Keratin treatments temporarily coats the hair with keratin to smooth the hair strand. Brazilian/Keratin treatments will wash out on average between 3-5 months, so you must visit a salon often to re-coat the hair with this method. There have been a number of Brazilian/Keratin treatments that have come to the attention of government health authorities as containing hazardous chemicals which release highly carcinogenic gas.
We are pleased to say that the system of Keratin Smoothing Treatment that Lily Jackson Hair & Makeup use, has been tested to the strictest standards and does not contain any ingredient which releases carcinogenic gases.
