Colorzoom is an annual international award held by Goldwell/KMS. There are 3 awards in the competition covering:

GLOBAL CREATIVE COLORIST – which is open to all GOLDWELL stylists who have more than five years professional experience. The GLOBAL NEW TALENT COLORIST is open to all GOLDWELL junior stylists who have less than five years professional experience. Finally, the GLOBAL PARTNER COLORIST category, which is open to all stylists who already have worked for the GOLDWELL brand as a freelancer, trainer or guest artist. Our team entered the first two categories. Read on to find out more about their looks and the make up  choices by Carissa…

The makeup direction for each model resulted from a brainstorming session with each stylist. I needed to heavily rely on their inspirations and how they envisioned their Colorzoom entry would look as a whole, as Colorzoom is a hair colour and cut competition, not a make up contest.

I really enjoyed the opportunity to be a part of each of the Stylists entries and had a great super busy day in the salon creating the looks!

Neo-Strawberry Shortcake

Stylist Christie Lee Goldwell/Colorzoom 2014

Hair Styled and Coloured by Christie Lee for Goldwell/KMS Colorzoom 2014

Stylist: Christie Lee

Inspiration: Christie’s hair inspiration came from strawberries. She wanted to use a variety of colours that would work together representing strawberries and strawberry confectionary.

Makeup Brief: Dark dramatic eye – the rest was up to me

Eyes: Dark dramatic eye using our Edi Minerals matt black pressed eye shadow and the black pencil liner.

Lips: Dramatic burgundy berry lip.

Cheeks: Neutral with minimal contouring

  • This eye and lip make up works well with Christie’s hair colour choices, which remind me of Neapolitan ice cream, the lips representing the strawberry stripe. I also thought the berry colour would work in harmony with the model’s pale skin tone.
  • The cheeks were kept quite neutral so the make up would not be too over-powering in the overall image. If the cheeks were dramatic here too the make up would have slipped sadly into 1980’s territory!

Mannequin Peacock

Inspiration: The beauty and colour of nature, from the wings of a butterfly to the feathers of a Peacock.

Makeup Brief: The Stylist wanted the model to appear mannequin-like with pearlesque luminous skin and strongly defined cheekbones.

Eyes: subtle contouring with a fleck of pastel green on the inside corner of the eye to add colour, life and interest to the overall look.

Lips: Kept nude to stay in tune with the mannequin brief. What I love most about this make up look is the model’s overall skin tone which is a beautiful beige bronze.

  • I think the make up compliments the hair and enhances the colour and structure of the hair.

Sunset Over Sea

Stylist: Carl Campbell

Inspiration: The beauty in the colours of the sun setting over the sea.

Makeup Brief: I have worked numerous times with Carl on hair and make up shoots. Carl let me have a lot of free-reign over the make up look so I made a few suggestions to him and we refined the concept together.

Eyes: I told Carl I loved the idea of a simple but striking sweep of silver across the model’s eyelid that looked like the stroke of a brush. He like this idea because although it was creative it still would not distract from the focus on the hair colour and cut, and we both thought it would enhance the olive tone in the model’s skin.

Lips: Kept a soft pink.

  • With Carl shooting last out of the 3 Stylists, I had the opportunity to go a little wild with the make up after we had captured his shot for the competition. I grabbed this opportunity and painted Cubist Picasso-inspired lines on the models face, at the same time as creating an eyelid colour akin to the ocean, which was one of Carl’s inspirations for the overall look. This eyelid make up detail teamed particularly well with the Elumen blue and turquoise hues in the hair.

It was great working with the team and I think you can really see each Stylists unique sense of style, approach and creativity coming through in the hair they’ve created for the competition. I cannot wait to see what they come up with next time we get to shoot together!

 How to…

These looks are definitely wearable for the girl who loves to play with make up. You can see looks similar to theses make up looks on the runway and at red carpet events. In particular:

  • A burgundy lip is frequently worn by actresses at awards events.

Kate Bosworth Burgundy Lips

  • Contouring is all the rage too! Think Kim Kardashian’s sculpted face.
  • Brush strokes of eye makeup is definitely contemporary, avante garde and runway territory. Think Chanel Fall CollectionParis Fashion Week 2014. This look is actually very wearable too, give it a try – imperfection is perfection, bring out the artist in you! You can use one single colour as I did, or be more adventurous and add a rainbow to your lids.
