Why did you choose to become a hairdresser?
When I was in school I’d cut my classmates hair in the library, making a hairy mess and leaving me with a terrible reputation among the librarians, but even then it was like an addiction.
“There’s such a strong connection between hair and emotions”
I wanted to give happiness to anyone and everybody who’d let me near them even before I knew why, in the best way I knew how. It seemed more than obvious to indulge my passion everyday.
How long have you been hairdressing?
I’ve been hairdressing for over 5 years.
Why have you stuck with it? What’s the best part of your job?
No two people are the same and no two days are the same.
As a stylist I’m constantly challenged and evolving with every client I have in my chair, and that gives you a massive sense of accomplishment, it drives you. The best part of my job is having the opportunity to change someone from the inside; whatever they felt before their appointment with me I know they walk out feeling better. That’s a remarkable thing to experience.
What are you passionate about outside of hairdressing?
I love hats, cushions, socks and beer! But most of all music…my partner is a musician so it goes without saying I go to see live music performances every week, and I get a few personal shows on my balcony too!
What’s the funniest moment you remember from your career?
I slipped over a pile of hair behind my client’s chair! I fell flat on the floor and I brought down the entire trolley with me, colour was everywhere! I certainly wasn’t laughing but I was told it was pretty hilarious, maybe retrospectively funny. Another time I accidently turned the basin spray nozzle on and had it pointing backwards, towards my face. I never lived it down.
Do you have any career highlights you’d like to mention?
It was amazing working with the hair team for the Woolmark Prize fashion show. Everyone who was anyone was there. It was the most frantic and stressful day of my life, but it was amazing collaborating with amazing artists.
What’s your favourite music at the moment?
Mostly I enjoy acoustic music, as long as it’s lively and catchy! Some of my favourites are Frank Turner and Paolo Nutini.
Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and what is their name?
I dog sit the family dog Shadow sometimes, she’s a dopey Alaskan malamute and gives the best hugs you’ll ever receive.
What the question you get asked the most?
I always get asked “what is your favourite type of haircut to do”? I love when clients opt for a change, even something seemingly small. It’s so rewarding to help a client re-imagine themselves in a new light.
Why did you choose Lily Jackson Hair & Makeup?
To continue to be inspired by like-minded and talented stylists, and give my clients the best possible experience I can.
